Our customers often comment on our friendly and personable approach, and we certainly believe that great people make a great business. Each month we profile people from around our organisation to find out who they are and what makes them tick. In the spotlight this month it’s Bill Appleton, Group Operations Director and king of our logistics!

1. How long have you worked for OfficeTeam? If you’re new to the business, where did you work previously?

23 years – I know I don’t look old enough to have been working so long!

2.Tell us about your job. What does your role involve?

I am responsible for giving excellent customer service at the lowest possible cost across our National Network of Regional Distribution Centres [3] and Local Distribution Centres [11], so I consider I run a Customer Service Department. Strategically I develop our service and my Team, some 340 strong, for future trading.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job?

Seeing both people and the business develop.

4. Tell us something we don’t know about you.

I am actually the youngest Motor Home owner in the UK

5. How would your colleagues describe you?

Numbering around a third of our workforce it probably needs a survey! I would hope the feedback would include very focused and adding value with a lot of respect for the wider Team.

6. Which OfficeTeam value do you most identify with, and why?

Hopefully all of them at some point… albeit “expert” may be pushing it!

7. What’s your proudest achievement?

Work wise – it is being part of a team that got us through the worst and longest recession in living memory which involved shedding £millions in costs whilst also improving service levels.

Personal – Being the father of two fine sons, although they still keep us poor!

8. What’s your ambition?

To live a much longer and healthy life – having much fun along the way.

9. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I am blessed with good friends and family so cramming most of my social life into the weekends is sufficient to keep me away from DIY!

10. If you were CEO… what would you do?

I think I would recruit Jeff Whiteway and make him share a room with a cross dresser as he once did to me at a sales conference!
