There is no denying that smartphones have penetrated into all aspects of our personal and working lives. From being connected on Facebook 24 hours a day to a quick game of Angry Birds while using the bathroom, nobody can escape the iron grip that smartphones have secured over our lives.

But what about businesses? More than just an entertainment device, modern smartphones are quickly becoming an effective tool for running your business while on the go. Here we present our top 5 apps for business users to get things done quickly and efficiently.

1. Dropbox

Dropbox is arguably the most useful app here, and a fantastic tool for storing all your documents in the cloud to access everywhere and share with anyone. Cloud computing is the new buzzword that has caused a seismic shift in how we’ve approached technology over the last few years. Instead of having all your files stored on your computer hard drive, “the cloud” is simply a name for something stored online, whether that is your personal photos and music, business documents, or even complete applications known as Software as a Service (SaaS). Using Dropbox means you can access (and edit) many of your documents on the go from any online device or computer and share with friends and colleagues!

2. Evernote

Evernote is a note-taking app. However, it offers much more when you delve into the clever features it offers. Of course syncing your notes across your computers and portable devices makes it easy to create new business ideas quickly, but one of our favourite functionalities is being able to capture contact details by taking a photo of someone’s business card. Evernote will automatically recognise names and numbers and add them to your contact list, making getting in touch with people a breeze.

3. Google Drive

If you work in an office, chances are you have experienced banging your head against a wall trying to get Word to align your text properly, or perhaps those huge, complicated Excel spreadsheets make you feel nauseous? Despite this, we still rely on these programs to get stuff done. After a bit of umm-ing and ahh-ing about which office suite to include here from the myriad of available options, we decided Google Drive was our favourite. Being able to save, share and edit in real-time through the cloud with colleagues is immensely helpful and can save plenty of your valuable time!

4. Splashtop

One of the greatest benefits of modern computing is that we don’t have to be stuck on our desktop all the time – we can take our work with us and use any device to get that work done. Inevitably though, there are times when we need the functionality that our desktop provides even when we aren’t at home. This is where Splashtop comes in. They offer a fully featured app that allows you to connect to your desktop PC and control it from your phone or tablet as if you were right there, even when you are on the other side of the world! Splashtop provides much of the same functionality as similar apps, but focuses on rich media compatibility such as video, music and web based Flash content.

5. Expense Manager

Our final app in our list of top mobile apps for business users concludes with what for many is the most important aspect of running a business – managing your expenditure! Whether your own personal expenses, or using a departmental budget, keeping track of your finances using Expense Manager is the most convenient method we have discovered so far. With support for multiple accounts, scheduling regular payments, budget planners, various calculation tools and even backup options to your Dropbox account, Expense Manager is our preferred way of managing our money. Expense Manager is available for Android only at the moment, but Mint.com is another alternative app that works well for both Android and iOS devices.
